TGRSA’S VAN ROOYEN AND MDAKANE READY FOR RED STAR
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing SA’s Michael van Rooyen and Mandla Mdakane are primed to take on Round 5 of the 2021 Global Touring Car (GTC) championship at the Red Star Raceway in Mpumalanga this weekend. Van Rooyen is locked in a tense battle for the title with fellow-Toyota Corolla driver, Robert Wolk, and will be aiming to retake the lead in the championship chase this weekend.
“Robbie and I have been having close races all year,” said the Rustenburg Rocket prior to this weekend’s race meet. “Interestingly, he has recorded only one victory this year, while I’ve bagged four – but in the end, the scoreboard says he is in the lead.”
This is due to Wolk’s consistent performances, which saw him chalk up six second places, in addition to his single victory. As a result, Wolk leads Van Rooyen by eight points, with two rounds remaining in the season.
“But two rounds equal four races, so a lot can still happen,” continued van Rooyen. “As always, we’ve done some work on our GTC Toyota Corolla, and we’re looking forward to the twisty challenges of the Red Star Raceway.”
At the same time, teammate Mandla Mdakane will be hoping for better luck this weekend. The Johannesburger is at the bottom end of the points table, though he trails Julian van der Watt (Ford) by just five points.
“We’ve had very bad luck so far this season,” said Mdakane. “First some issues with wheels and tyres, and lately with the electrics of our car. But that’s motorsport – sometimes the luck just goes against you. Still, we’re hoping for some clean runs at Red Star this weekend.”
This weekend’s racing kicks off with practice sessions on Friday, and Qualifying plus two races on Saturday.
